Alvin J. Siteman Cancer Center
The Alvin J. Siteman Cancer Center at Barnes-Jewish Hospital and Washington University School of Medicine is an international leader in cancer treatment, research, prevention, education and community outreach. Parent institutions Barnes-Jewish Hospital and Washington University School of Medicine are nationally and internationally known as well. U.S. News & World Report magazine consistently ranks both institutions among the very best in the country.
One of the most recognized cancer programs in the United States, the Siteman Cancer Center is a National Cancer Institute Comprehensive Cancer Center, the only one in Missouri. This prestigious designation—NCI’s highest level of distinction—is based on Siteman’s strong basic and clinical research, as well as its screening and prevention programs.
In addition, the Siteman Cancer Center is one of only 21 institutions that make up the National Comprehensive Cancer Network (NCCN), a nonprofit alliance of leading centers dedicated to improving the quality and effectiveness of cancer care. As an NCCN member, Siteman is helping to develop resources for cancer patients, healthcare providers and other groups. These include treatment and clinical practice guidelines, information about clinical trials and educational conferences and literature.
Siteman’s partnerships with individuals, corporations, foundations and community organizations have provided invaluable support. This participation in our mission has helped accelerate the fight against cancer.
The generosity of our friends and community has established and enhanced a variety of important initiatives at Siteman. These include support to advance leading-edge research, without which important breakthroughs would have been lost; to endow professorships to recruit and retain the most outstanding physicians and scientists; to create lecture series that foster scientific exchange by hosting cancer experts from around the country; to promote cancer prevention, outreach and support programs throughout the region; and to help patients who face financial hardships as a result of a cancer diagnosis.
The strength and breadth of the community support for Siteman encourages us to keep moving forward, to keep inspiring people to give. Ultimately, the bonds we are building make us more than simply a cancer center. By participating in our work, our friends have become part of our family, and we have become part of the fabric of the community we serve.
