Transforming Lives — Generation After Generation

Marion Horstman, BS’66 University College
Earning a degree from Washington University changed my life.  When I graduated from Soldan High School in St. Louis, I couldn’t afford to go to college.  I went to work in a series of office jobs, but I knew I needed a college degree to further my career.

Like many University College students and graduates, it wasn’t easy for me to balance class time with my family and work responsibilities.  In addition to caring for my mother and grandmother, I sometimes worked three jobs to make ends meet.  It took eight years, but I graduated with a bachelor’s degree in business accounting.  My education made it possible for me to become an auditor with the United States Department of the Treasury, and I remained there until my retirement in 1988.  Today I continue to be inspired by the people I meet through the Lifelong Learning Institute and other volunteer activities.

I support scholarships in University College because I want to help today’s students have the kinds of opportunities that made such a difference to me.
