The Science of Cats and the Future of Nature with Jonathan Losos

Learn why Jonathan Losos, the William H. Danforth Distinguished University Professor and director of the Living Earth Collaborative, is teaching a course on cats and how it relates to the university’s efforts to conserve biodiversity and sustain life on Earth. In his presentation, Losos offers key revelations from his recent book, The Cat’s Meow: How Cats Evolved from the Savanna to Your Sofa, and explores how scientists are using all the cutting-edge tools of biodiversity science (GPS tracking, genomics, forensic archaeology) to understand where cats came from, why they do what they do, and what the future may hold.

Land, Sea, and Sky: City Park and Union Station Tour

Tour starts and ends at the roundabout at the Brookings Loop on the east end of the Danforth Campus

Choose your own land, sea, or sky adventure off-campus! By land, guided by CityPark Stadium staff, celebrants will tour the state-of-the-art facility which is home to St. Louis’s new major league soccer team, City SC (locker room tour not included). By sea, immerse yourself in the underwater world of 13,000 creatures at the St. Louis Aquarium. By sky, see the skyline from the St. Louis Wheel or challenge your sense of adventure with 90,000-cubic feet of climbing space and 30 obstacles at the St. Louis Ropes Course, indoors and three-stories high.

Union Station registrants will receive two vouchers per person to be used at any approved attractions. Tickets for the Aquarium at Union Station are timed entry. Ropes Course rules: everyone must wear shoes with a closed toe and heel. Children 12 and under must be accompanied on the ropes course by a paid 18+ adult.

Visit some of St. Louis’s oldest buildings, explore a hidden neighborhood formerly known as Frenchtown, and view damage from the Great Cyclone of 1896 with your own eyes. Guided by a staff member from the Missouri Historical Society, attendees will tour the Soulard neighborhood on foot. Soulard is home to the oldest farmer’s market west of the Mississippi River, historical red-brick row houses, and many local eateries and shops. Attendees will have the opportunity to grab a quick bite to eat upon arrival before the walking tour begins.

Our Bear Club child-care program keeps your kids ages 0-17 safe and entertained while you enjoy your reunion event. Children will be divided into age-appropriate tracks, with the evening’s “They Had a Dream” theme offering engaging activities sure to capture their attention. New at the brunch this year: Donut Man Stan! Stan brings his automatic donut machine which will entertain guests as you watch it make Stan’s 2015 Riverfront Times Magazine’s Best Doughnut Shops in Saint Louis Award winning donuts. Seven varieties of donuts will be available including plain, sugar, powdered sugar, cinnamon/sugar, multi-colored sprinkles plus both vanilla and chocolate icing which together provides for a possible “21” different donut topping combinations.

Christopher Barker, St. Louis Magician, will do strolling and table magic while attendees enjoy brunch. He will do a 15-minute close-up magic set at 10:15am.

Visit the Kemper Art Museum to see several special exhibits on display. One by St. Louis-based artic Kahlil Robert Irving. Irving “critically engages with the history of the medium and challenges constructs around identity and culture in the Western world.” When viewing the exhibit you are able to step onto and walk around the art, engaging with it from different perspectives. Another exhibit by Santiago Sierra presents “52 Canvases Exposed to Mexico City’s Air,” which refers to the pollution in Mexico City as well as the increase of airborne contaminants in parts of the world. The third exhibit, “Tragic Depictions: Negative Emotions in the Visual Arts,” explores why we find and enjoy negative emotions when engaging with certain pieces of art.
