Fireside Chat with WashU parent Clarissa Weirick on Entertainment Law— July 20, 2020
The WashU Entertainment Network and the Alumni Association hosted a virtual event on July 20. Clarissa Weirick, WashU parent and retired General Counsel of the NBCUniversal Filmed Entertainment Group was interviewed by active HollyWU, the Los Angeles Entertainment Network, alumna volunteer Ellen Eichner, JD '15. Clarissa Weirick discussed her wealth of knowledge regarding marketing and distribution within entertainment law. She has been working in transitioning physical to digital distribution since 2001. Some of the first digital deals she worked on as an entertainment lawyer were with Apple, Amazon and Netflix while at Warner Bros.

Networking Reception with Alumni and Current Students

The WashU Los Angeles Network and the Alumni Host Committee gathered
in Los Angeles at Starz Entertainment for an evening of networking with alumni,
parents, and current WashU students exploring careers in the entertainment
industry. Current students were interested in meeting and mingling with alumni
and parents during their visit to Southern California as a part of the Career
Center Road Shows, where they would learn about careers in the entertainment
industry.
Seventeen current students and fifty-five local alumni and
parents enjoyed networking together. All attendees heard brief introductions
from the Alumni Host Committee who represented Starz Entertainment, Disney,
freelance writing, music production, and a talent agency.

Business Affairs, Starz Entertainment, for hosting us at the Starz
Entertainment offices in Santa Monica.

discussing the significant role, responsibilities, and knowledge base of
producers working in various platforms, including television, fiction film, documentary
film, and new medias. The panel was moderated by

Communications for NBC Entertainment.

The WashU Entertainment Network and WashU New York Network hosted “A Conversation with |
Andrew Karpen, BSBA ’88, CEO, Bleeker Street Media.” Andrew Karpen is the CEO of Bleecker Street, an independently financed distribution company based in New York City. Karpen’s company has released Debra Granik’s Leave No Trace, Steven Soderbergh’s Logan Lucky, the Academy Award-nominated Captain Fantastic, starring
Viggo Mortensen, and the hit thriller, Eye in the Sky. Karpen has over 20 years of experience in film and television.
He was previously Co-CEO with James Schamus of Focus Features, which he joined in 2002 as COO and was responsible for the company’s finance, operations and strategic planning.
The evening began with a networking reception at the Roosevelt Hotel followed by a conversation with Andrew, moderated by Nivedita Kulkarni, BSBA ’07, Chair, WashU Entertainment and Media Network.
