Washington University is a research university where the traditional boundaries of disciplines, departments and schools are never barriers to knowledge and discovery. Washington University also has a rich history of collaborating with regional and international corporations, foundations, organizations and other strategic partners to apply these discoveries for the benefit of all. The McDonnell International Scholars Academy, formally established in 2005, and the Institute for Public Health, launched in 2008, are but two examples that demonstrate Washington University’s foresight in a changing world. Both speak to the university’s ability to launch and sustain innovative experiments in interdisciplinary collaboration and strategic academic partnerships.

​Strengthening the following interdisciplinary, university-wide initiatives will enable Washington University to leverage its intellectual capital and collaborations to make new discoveries that can have significant impact throughout the world in the 21st century:
