Interdisciplinary Centers and University-Wide Initiatives

The Importance of Philanthropy

Generous lead gifts from visionary donors and philanthropists like John McDonnell, Robert and Julie Skandalaris, Harvey and Dorismae Friedman and former Congressman Richard Gephardt, along with significant institutional investments, made launching these interdisciplinary, university-wide centers and institutes possible. The generosity of other donors and strategic partners has helped these initiatives grow and expand. Attracting the resources necessary to sustain these programs and achieve ambitious yet attainable goals is a key strategic priority for Washington University. Because of this, Washington University is increasingly turning to private support from alumni, parents, friends, corporations, foundations, faculty and staff to fuel the continued growth of these successful and significant academic enterprises.

Washington University is preparing tomorrow’s leaders and innovators by engaging students in interdisciplinary and collaborative approaches that will advance mutual understanding and environmental, economic, public health and social development at home and abroad.
