“I’m even more motivated to succeed because I know there are people investing in my future.”

Growing up in a single-parent home in Avondale, Louisiana, Darius Calliet knew it would be difficult to fund his education. “It’s not often that kids in my neighborhood have the opportunity to go to college,” he says.

His mother always stressed the importance of a good education, however, and helped her family overcome obstacles. “We survived Hurricane Katrina,” Darius says. “My older sister graduated from college and is now a nurse. With another sister in college, I wasn’t sure how my mother would pay my tuition and fees.

“My scholarship is the reason I’m a Washington University student today,” Darius continues. “Without it, I honestly would not be here. I’m even more motivated to succeed because I know there are people investing in my future.”

Darius is pursuing a degree in business administration. He finds the environment at the Olin Business School welcoming. In his freshman year, he took a computer-aided design course, for which he researched and identified solutions to poor air quality and other real-world problems. His professors challenge him academically and encourage his critical thinking skills. He is developing team-building skills, too, and hopes one day to own his own business.

“Donor support inspires me and other students to reach our full potential,” Darius says. “Thank you for giving us the opportunity to acquire an excellent Washington University education.”
