Hugh Hoagland has
known for a long time that he wanted to spend his college years studying art. It
was important to him to attend a university that offered both a top-notch art
program and high-quality academics.
“Washington
University stands out for its great reputation in both areas, but I wasn’t sure
I could afford to attend,” says Hugh. “My dad paints houses and my mom teaches
pre-school, and they didn’t have many resources to help with my education. When
I was admitted to the Sam Fox School of Design & Visual Arts, I received an
amazing scholarship that made it possible to attend my dream school.”
At
Washington University, Hugh has been able to do what he loves—experiment with a
variety of methods and materials and dive into the creative process—in an
excellent art program, while also pursuing rigorous academic work. In addition
to his studies in art, he has had the opportunity to pursue a second major in
art history through the College of Arts & Sciences.
“I’ve only been able to be a Washington
University student because of my scholarship, and many of my peers are in the
same situation,” says Hugh. “Gifts to the Annual Fund create opportunities for
students like me and help provide resources for outstanding programs,
facilities, and professors.”
