Spain: Total Solar Eclipse
Featuring faculty host: Professor of Physics, Mark Alford
Witness the mesmerizing total solar eclipse on August 12, 2026, set against the stunning backdrop of the Mediterranean off the coast of Spain’s island of Mallorca! During this eclipse, viewers will experience the unparalleled thrill of seeing totality with the Sun so low on the horizon that its silhouetted disk will be distorted into an oval by atmospheric refraction. The unique celestial geometry will create dramatic atmospheric effects not seen when totality is high overhead. This journey begins in the vibrant city of Barcelona, where the luxurious Grand Central Hotel will be your home base from which you’ll venture out to explore the heart of Barcelona’s Gothic Quarter, its historic streets, and hidden gems. Then you’ll fly to the charming village of Valldemossa in the Tramuntana mountains where, as evening approaches, you’ll set sail from Port de Soller to witness the awe-inspiring total solar eclipse.
